From one little seed…

From just one little seed a whole new garden can begin to grow…and we are here to help you at every step of the way.

On these pages we wanted to share some information about three of our favourite plants that can be grown from seed – the agapanthus, the echinops and the helianthus – and how you can grow them. We hope you find them both interesting and a fun way to begin your journey to a new dream place.

Echinops

Echinops sphaerocephalus, known by the common name great globe thistle or pale globe-thistle, is a species of globe thistle belonging to the family Asteraceae.

The genus name derives from the Greek words ‘ekhinos’ meaning ‘hedgehog’ and ‘opisis’ meaning ‘aspect’, referring to the appearance of the flowerhead, while the species name sphaerocephalus derives from the words ‘sphaera’ meaning ‘round’ and ‘kephalos’ meaning head.

This species is native to Eurasia but it lives on other continents where it was introduced, including North America where it is a widespread weed. It is very common in the mountains of southern France and southern and central Europe. This is a perennial herbaceous plant which reaches on average 50–100 cms (20–39 ins) of height, with a maximum of two metres.

How to grow

Sow from late winter to spring in a good seed compost just covering the seed with compost and gently firm down compost and seal inside a polythene bag after sowing. Germination  usually takes 10-20 days at 20-25C (70-75F).

When the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant and grow on in cooler conditions.

Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting out, after all risk of frost, 60cm (24in) apart in a sunny spot on light well drained soil.
